Role Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Head of Claims and Insurance to lead and manage all aspects of marine insurance, cargo claims, and vessel-related claims for the CMA CGM APAC region. This role involves overseeing hull & machinery (H&M), crew, cargo, and third-party liability claims, ensuring efficient claims handling, risk mitigation, and recovery optimization in coordination and under supervi-sion with CMA CGM head office. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in managing large-scale casualties, legal disputes, and insurance recoveries while providing strategic guidance to stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
Marine Claims (Hull & Machinery (H&M), Crew, P&I):
- Manage vessel casualties (fire, grounding, salvage, General Average) and ensure timely claims processing.
- Oversee H&M, P&I, and other fleet insurance covers, ensuring proper filing and coordination with insurers.
- Conduct causation investigations, identify third-party liabilities, and maximize recovery from in-surers and third parties.
- Negotiate settlements and recoveries on the best possible terms.
Cargo Claims & Litigations:
- Handle customer claims, lawsuits, and recovery actions from insurers, lawyers, and third parties in Asia region.
- Ensure cargo claims are resolved with minimal operational/market impact while protecting CMA CGM’s interests.
- Manage Serenity (self-retained claims) and Elite customer claims per company SOPs.
Strategic & Leadership Functions
- Lead and mentor the Claims & Insurance team, ensuring alignment with business objectives
- Provide legal and operational advice on emerging risks, contractual clauses, and non-standard situations.
- Identify process/knowledge gaps and implement improvements to reduce legal/financial expo-sure.
- Occasional business travel may be required.
What We're Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Law or Marine Insurance (Master’s preferred).
- ideally 10 years in marine insurance, cargo claims, and hull & machinery claims (shipowners, P&I Clubs, or maritime law firms).
- Strong knowledge of maritime laws, conventions (Hague-Visby, Hamburg Rules), and insurance practices.
- Proficiency in SAP, Excel, Microsoft Office, and claims management systems.
- Leadership & Soft skills -
- Proven supervisory/managerial experience in a similar role.
- To conduct proper Cargo Claim and H&M training to all internal stakeholders as required
- Team player, resilient, proactive, and able to work under tight deadlines.
- Cost driven
- Excellent negotiation, communication, data maintenance and management and stakeholder management skills.
- In-depth knowledge of the container shipping/liner industry is a plus.
