Position Summary
Supervises the routing and dispatching of all import IPI volume to the United States. Coordinates closely with the import rail coordinators and Manager of Intermodal Rail to ensure all containers are processed within the allotted time frame to ensure other departments stay within their KPI. Coordinates with Procurement Managers to ensure rail routes are properly assigned and utilized by the team. Communicates daily with port operations and related trucking companies in order to ensure timely movement of on dock and off dock rail containers. Issues weekly instructions to terminals regarding the placement of rail cargo for proper delivery. Responsible to avoid storage costs by billing within allowed time frames.
Functions & Duties
Description % of Time Spent
• Assist Import Rail dispatchers in managing exceptions and oddities associated with the cargo being moved by rail. This includes diversions, improperly booked freight, freight discharged at the wrong port, and freight misrouted by the port terminals. This includes securing rail storage. 20%
• Watch 20’ units likely to experience mate delays. Research options and costs for moving 20’ mateless containers and offer them to the customer, Trade, the origin office, or HO. 10%
• Interact with Customer Service, IBVC, Sales, Trade, HO, and origin offices on issues associated with the movement of cargo. Read, research, and answer e-mails and telephone calls. 20%
• Work on matters concerning subordinates. These include time off, time worked, issues with the time keeping system, and their questions. Working with Human Resources on these same issues. Documenting the performance of subordinates. Interviewing applicants. 15%
• Interface with intermodal management on exceptions and issues affecting the movement of cargo. This includes mate delays, port terminal issues, trucking issues, and railroad issues. 10%
• Manage, create, and maintain reports for management. 15%
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
• Proficient computer skills with a working knowledge of Access, PowerPoint, and Excel required
• General understanding and working knowledge of the inland transportation industry in one or more of the following areas: rail networks, rail operations, rail billing, Electronic Data Exchange (EDI), vendor invoicing
• Excellent analytical skills
• Detail-oriented with strong organization skills
