THE ROLE

Lead the CMA Ships Dry dock department and be accountable for the planning, execution, cost, duration, quality and safety of all dry dockings of the fleet. Define the dry dock and yard strategy, pursue the industrialisation and standardisation of dry dock management.

 

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ?

 

As per company standards, you shall:

  • Comply with IMS and all relevant international rules and regulations;
  • Ensure all your duties in accordance with quality, health, safety, environmental and ethics policies;
  • Propose a continuous performance improvement plan which will be reported and reviewed on a periodical basis;
  • Be a member of the Operations department management team and deputise for the V.P. fleet Operation on dry dock matters when required.

1. Strategy and governance:

  • Define the dry dock strategy of the fleet: docking policy per vessel type and age, class renewal cycles, dry dock intervals and extensions, aligned with CMA Ships objectives;
  • Define the yard strategy in coordination with Procurement: yard portfolio by region, yard assessment and grading, slot reservation, framework agreements and price references;
  • Drive the standardisation and industrialisation of dry dock management: standard specifications per vessel series, standard work packages, planning tools, data and dashboards;

 

2. Team management:

  • Lead, organise and size the Dry dock department, in line with the fleet docking workload;
  • Define the department’s competency and training framework, and ensure team onboarding and qualification;
  • Set up and ensure continued operation, reporting, briefings and meetings when relevant;

3. Site offices management:

  • Supervise site and regional offices (organisation, resources, accounts and planning) and ensure their performance and compliance with company rules.

4. Planning:

  • In collaboration with:
    • the Fleet Director / DirOps and the Lines, validate the multi-year (5-year) and annual docking plans of the fleet and arbitrate slot and timing conflicts;
    • the Fleet Director and the Technical department, approve dry dock standard specifications and ensure retrofit / technical projects are integrated into docking scopes;
  • Approve project scopes, specifications, yard selection and associated DAI within the delegation of authority, and escalate above threshold;
  • Ensure yard capacity is secured in advance for the whole fleet docking plan;
  • Organise unplanned / emergency dockings (damage repairs) with Fleet, Technical and Insurance.

5. Execution:

  • Manage, through the Dry dock managers, the project leaders and superintendents in charge of daily operations on site;
  • Be accountable for:
    • jobs supervision and commissioning;
    • the management of deviations to the initial specifications;
    • the compliance of docking duration, cost and quality with the approved DAI;
    • the safety of yard operations (yard HSE standards, contractor management);
  • Handle escalations with shipyards at senior level and negotiate the settlement of major disputes;
  • Oversee second-hand vessel takeovers and ship recycling projects falling under the Dry dock scope.

 

6. Close-out and hand-over:

  • Ensure EDD are reviewed and approved within the agreed timeframe;
  • Ensure handover and close-out meetings are held;
  • Oversee technical and financial project close-out, claims resolution, and guarantee follow-up with yards and suppliers;
  • Ensure lessons learned are captured, shared and fed back into standard specifications and procedures.

7. Budget, monitoring and reporting:

  • Own the fleet’s annual and multi-year dry dock budget with Cost Control and Finance; monitor actuals against budget and forecast.
  • Define objectives, monitor and report the performance regularly;
  • Benchmark yards and costs to support negotiations and yard selection.

 

 

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR ?

 

  • Master’s degree in marine engineering, naval architecture or equivalent; seagoing background (Chief Engineer) or senior technical superintendent experience
  • Fluent English; French is an asset.
  • 15 years minimum in ship management, including at least 8 years in dry dock / ship repair management;
  • Proven experience in managing a large, multi-yard and multi-region fleet docking programme;
  • Proven experience in managing a multi-level team (managers of managers) and significant budgets.
  • Analytical skills; data-driven decision making;
  • Demonstrated willingness to be flexible to change priorities;
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the team, management and external partners.
  • Ability to influence and arbitrate with senior stakeholders
