Material Handler/Operator III

 

 

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?

 

Performs various manual operations and operates equipment in a warehouse and logistics process.  Receives, identifies, stores, picks, and moves goods and material and operates hand trucks, pallet jacks, forklifts, palletizers, and other equipment as required.  The Material Handler/Operator path has three levels of responsibility, Material Handler/Operator I, Material Handler/Operator II and Material Handler/Operator III.  Each level has increasing levels of understanding and operation of warehouse activities, equipment, and documentation.  

Common Working Titles May Include:  Freight Handler, Material Handler, Forklift Operator, and Warehouse Worker.  This does not include drivers or office employees. 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:  Material Handler/Operator I

Summary:  Moves product and material using manual or equipment operation.  Verifies information, prepares orders and completes appropriate documents; typically involves more manual operations, more routine or standard in nature and basic or less complex requirements. 

  • Performs various manual labor functions such as picking inventory, counting cargo, product and material and hand staging, and loading goods; uses manual equipment such as hand truck or pallet jack.
  • Receives, stores, and distributes material, tools, equipment, and products within assigned area.
  • Prepares and assembles orders, moves materials and items from receiving or production areas to storage or to other designated areas.
  • Sorts and places materials or items on racks, shelves, pallets or in bins according to predetermined sequence such as size, type, style, color, product code and related characteristics; tend to be more routine or typical. 
  • Operates a forklift once certified and required; operation tends to be more limited or is less complex operation/movements.
  • Completes or verifies appropriate forms, documents, labels, and other information to ensure the accuracy of inventory, monitor and track material and successful receiving and/or delivery of goods; tends to be basic information or standard in nature.
  • Operates hand tools to close or open bales, build, or tear down crates, and other containers or material; tends to be more predictable packaging.  
  • Ensures compliance with company policies and procedures and a safe and effective work environment. 
  • Assists with identifying potential operational or service concerns, notifies appropriate co-workers and assists with resolving. 
  • Performs various warehouse maintenance tasks, including sweeping floors, cleaning docks, staging, packing, racking and related storage areas, proper storing equipment, basic preventative maintenance, and related tasks.
  • Always develops and maintains excellent customer service to internal and external customers, such as working collaboratively, providing timely communications and instruction, and assisting with operations as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Material Handler/Operator II:

Summary:  Moves product and material using several sources of manual or equipment operation.  Verifies information, prepares orders and completes appropriate documents; typically involves more complex equipment, multiple cells, or operations, and advanced or non-standard requirements. 

  • May serve as a lead operator in less complex, smaller teams or standard operations.
  • Operates a forklift when required and is fully trained and operational; may not perform the most complex, heavy or oversized transports.
  • Sorts and places materials or items on racks, shelves, or in bins according to predetermined sequence such as size, type, style, color, product code and related characteristics; tends to be more complex or in multiple cells or operations and fully trained.
  • Operates hand tools to close or opens bales, build or tear down crates, and other containers or material; packaging can be advanced or non-standard.
  • Completes or verifies appropriate forms, documents, labels and other information to ensure the accuracy of inventory, monitor and track material and successful receiving and/or delivery of goods; involves knowledge of several operations or varied goods and services.
  • Identifies potential operational or service concerns, notifies appropriate co-workers and assists with resolving. 
  • Ensures compliance with company policies and procedures and a safe and effective work environment.
  • Assists with training and providing basic work instructions to new hires or transfers.
  • Always develops and maintain excellent customer service to internal and external customers, such as working collaboratively, providing timely communications and instruction and assisting with operations as necessary.
  • Receives, stores, and distributes material, tools, equipment, and products within assigned area.
  • Prepares and assembles orders, picks and counts material, moves and loads materials between operations or trucks; uses labor or manual equipment such as hand truck or pallet jack.
  • Performs various warehouse maintenance tasks, including sweeping floors, cleaning docks, staging, packing, racking and related storage areas, proper storing equipment, basic preventative maintenance, and related tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Material Handler/Operator III:

Summary:  Serves as a lead to staff and provides work direction.  Performs the most complex operations, ensures employees are trained and is fully trained in all operational areas.

Performs above accountabilities, and in addition:

  • Performs similar operations as the Operator II, is fully trained and operational in all areas of the operation.
  • Performs all forklift requirements, including heavy and oversized pieces. 
  • Prioritizes and assigns work and provides work direction.
  • Works with supervisors and trainers to ensure staff are trained, provides assistance and feedback and completes appropriate forms or documents when required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Experience & Skills

Education:

Required:  High school Diploma or GED required. 

Experience:

Level I Required: No experience is required.

Level II Required:  Typically, at least two years of warehousing or related logistics experience, or successful completion of a rotation program.

Level Lead Required:  Typically, at least five years of warehousing or related logistics experience.

Material Handler/Operator I Skills:

  • Responding promptly and professionally to customer needs.
  • Reading, comprehending, and completing basic checklists, forms, or other related documents. 
  • Performing in a team environment. 
  • Operating hand and power tools.
  • Performing manual tasks.
  • Following safety policies and procedures.
  • Basic proficiency in operating a computer.
  • Ability to become forklift certified, when required. 

 

Material Handler/Operator II Skills:

  • Operating hand and power tools, including hand truck, pallet jack, and related warehouse equipment.
  • Responding promptly and professionally to customer needs, including in a warehouse environment.
  • Reading, comprehending, and completing shipping, receiving and related operational documents. 
  • Performing in a team environment. 
  • Performing manual tasks, including those in a warehouse environment.
  • Following safety policies and procedures, including those in a warehouse environment.
  • Basic proficiency in Internet, web-based and job specific software applications.
  • Assisting with providing basic work instructions.
  • Identifying and resolving potential operational concerns.
  • Operating a forklift or the ability to become forklift certified, when required.

 

Material Handler/Operator III Skills: 

  • Prioritizing and assigning work.
  • Providing training and guidance to staff.

 

LICENSES and certifications:

 

Required:

Forklift Certification typically required in most operations within 3 to 6 months of hire.

Preferred:

Valid state issued driver's license.

Forklift Certification.

Travel Requirements:

       Typically, not required.
