About the Role:

 

Reporting to: General Manager Commercial & TTZ Line, dotted line to Head of Operations ANL Lines
Employment Type: Permanent, Full-Time
Work Location: WFH + South Wharf

 

This role oversees trade operations, manages the Ship Manager/Planner team, optimises vessel schedules and port arrangements, controls OPEX, ensures compliance with CII requirements, and reports to both the GM Commercial & TTZ Line and Head of Operations.

 

Key responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Ship Manager team, including setting KPIs and driving skill and performance improvement.
  • Oversee and optimise vessel schedules, proforma execution, schedule recovery plans, and coordination with agencies, terminals, and vessel command.
  • Manage operational costs, including bunker consumption, restows, stowage/tonnage performance, and vessel intake to maximise liftings.
  • Handle vessel phase-in/phase-out processes, vetting, charter-related liaison, and compliance with MO32, NZ MPI, VSA/JWP, and operational procedures.
  • Monitor schedule integrity, weather impacts, productivity levels, and escalate operational risks or deviations to leadership as required.
  • Maintain operational data and reporting (e.g., LISA updates, V2PS accuracy, bunker analysis, schedule status reports) and ensure all administrative requirements are met.
  • Coordinate cross-functionally with Line Management, Cargo Flow, Chartering, Legal, and HO on operational matters, projects, and incident management.

 

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Tertiary qualifications in nautical studies or equivalent seagoing competency (business studies preferred) and 7–10 years’ operational shipping industry experience.
  • Strong knowledge of statutory requirements for vessel operations in Australia and practical terminal/shipboard operational experience.
  • Proven supervisory experience with the ability to lead, motivate, and manage a team effectively.
  • Excellent commercial acumen, negotiation capability, and a strategic, proactive problem-solving mindset.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with planning tools (Powerstow, MACS3, Planmaster, Easecon, etc.) is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, organisational ability, and capacity to manage competing priorities under pressure.
  • Strong analytical skills and consistently professional behaviour when engaging with internal and external stakeholders.
