Head of Operations, ANL
ANL is an expert container shipping company to and from Australia, New Zealand and Oceania. ANL has a branch network in South East Asia, China and Oceania and offers bespoke services through ANL Logistics and ANL Container Hire & Sales in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
Summary
As the Head of Operation (ANL), you will be overseeing the operations of ANL lines including vessel scheduling, stowage planning and consortium arrangements ensuring that ANL & CMA CGM’s interests are protected. In addition, you will also be responsible for monitoring and controlling voyage costs (slot costs), OPEX costs, and managing the execution of contracts with service providers to drive terminal partnership programs.
Responsibilities
Line Operations
- Implement company Liner strategies into daily operations to meet operations department objectives
- Ensure targets / budget are met for all liner operations cost items
- Liaise with relevant regulatory bodies in order to manage compliance requirements for marine management, and liner operations, with regards to logistics and procurement
- Review vessel operating activity to ensure schedule integrity and fleet operating costs optimization
- Lead representative from the Operations department to support any legal investigation that may arise for the company
Operational and System Responsibilities
- Responsible for ensuring operations are carried out in a cost effective and productive manner with high focus on safety, environmental and risk management
- Monitor, analyse and control OPEX costs in the Oceania region
- Responsible for execution of contracts with service providers
- Drive partnership programs to improve efficiency, productivity
- Ensure timely and efficient processing of admin functions - bunker invoices, PCR, bayplans are carried out in a timely manner
- Represent ANL in OPSCOM with consortium partners
- Liaise with port authorities, terminals, service providers and regulatory bodies to understand operational capacities and limitations at all ports in Oceania region
- Provide feedback to executive management in formulating strategies for fleet upgrade, network optimisation accordingly
- Responsible for handling operations emergencies and act as a focal point with all departments within and outside organisation
- Assist with the overall preparation of the operations including co-ordination of data from all sources
Commercial Responsibilities
- Proactive management of vessel scheduling consistent with corporate strategic objective of minimizing costs for the Group
- Establish systems and processes to ensure voyage costs are maintained in line with the budget
- Incorporate a business-focused operations strategy to ensure engagement with commercial teams and identify opportunities for continuous improvement aligned with group’s strategy
- Assess and review contracts and agreements with a view to provide feedback to executive management
- Carry out line studies for Network optimisation, business development, agility initiatives
Management Responsibilities
- Engage with stakeholders and participate in projects on an on-going basis
- Directly responsible for training and mentoring of Operations Officer / Specialist / Operations Assistant
- Engage stakeholders to hire and retain talented individuals
- Align Operations team values to be consistent with those of the organization
- Chair weekly meetings with all Direct and Indirect Reports, ensuring that minutes and action items are documented. Provide management direction on Lines Operations
Strategic planning researching for enhancing new services
- Undertake / oversee the following activities for presentation to the ANLS Board:
- Monitor shipping activities in the Oceania region and report to respective principals
- Study new shipping routes, new business opportunities and report to principals
- Constant coordination with clients, commercial/line management teams, ports & terminal operators for gathering information and providing recommendation to principals on required day to day strategic changes
- Periodical reviews on vendor performance to provide necessary recommendations to principals
- Investigate / monitor on new investment opportunities in terminals / depot and intermodal activities
Supervision and management of transitions / integration of subsidiaries and their operating applications
- Analyse the functionality differences (Gap analysis) between the Group’s lines
- Provide the operational functionality knowledge for integrating the Group’s lines
- Manage drafting of operational SOPs, SLAs etc.
- Ensure proper training and knowledge transfer of staff for all operating applications
- Follow up their progress and KPIs
Requirements
- Master Class 1 qualifications or equivalent tertiary qualifications in Nautical Studies OR Tertiary qualifications, business studies are recommended
- Minimum 10 years in shipping with experience in Operations / Logistics / Intermodal / Documentation / Commercial & Finance
- Relevant sea going experience
- Proficient working knowledge of statutory requirements in vessel operations in the Australian Shipping Industry
- Sound practical experience in the terminal / shipboard operational aspect of the shipping industry
- High degree of computer literacy and operational knowledge
- Conceptual and analytical skills essential
- Sound oral and written communication skills
- Negotiation and conciliation skills
- Ability to manage and work with a diverse work force
- Organisational skills
- Able to work under pressure, prioritize, meet deadlines, cope with changing circumstances and communicate with clients and staff
